Tamolitch (Blue Pool) Waterfall

We are staying for the next month in a cabin at the McKenzie River Mountain Resort. Its not really a resort but it is great for me. Lots of grass around the cabin to play in, cool weather and the best part is we are only a little ways from a creek I can swim in. Did I tell you how much I like water?

Tamolitch Falls (Blue Pool)

Mom, Dad and I hiked the 2 miles (4 miles round trip) to see the Blue Pool. The 4 mile hike was tiring (I haven’t hiked that far in awhile) but so fun. A couple of places I could play in the water and cool off.

Once a majestic waterfall, the McKenzie River has changed course and gone underground a few miles up stream. The river only flows over the falls a few times a year, the rest if the time the water emerges from the rocks underwater in the basin of waterfall pool. This is a unique site. While it is rare to see a large waterfall ledge completely dry, the color and composition of the pool is also unique. One of the first things you’ll notice is the color of the water. The topaz blue color of the water is almost iridescent – like a blue anti-freeze. The water is so clear that is seems to be only about 5 ft deep – yet closer inspection will reveal that in many spots its over 30 ft deep. So pure in fact that you’d swear the water wasn’t moving – yet at the end of this glass like pond – a volume of water rushes out as the McKenzie River is reborn. The waterfall ledge is a favorite for jumping on a hot summer day. (The water is cold and be very careful to check the area for safety first). You can hike over the waterfall ledge and find a trail that leads you down to the side of the pool. This unique place is part of Oregon’s famous McKenzie River Trail. It is on the top half of the trail about 2 miles from the halfway point on the trail. The trail goes right by this interesting feature and is a popular place for hikers and mountain bikers to stop and rest while taking in this unique site.

We were really lucky to go when we did. This year the snow fall has been so high in Oregon that there is an actual waterfall. Two waterfalls in fact. Dad says we will go back before we leave and after the waterfall has gone back underground to see pool.

Proxy Falls and Three Sisters

The McKenzie River gorge is just one beautiful place after another. We haven’t seen them all but are going to try over the next few weeks.

While mom was on a long hike Dad and I drove up the McKenzie Pass road toward Sisters. Got to stop along the way and play in some very cold water. Brrr!

Dad got to take some pictures of what are called the Three Sisters. Really pretty and snow!

There is a trail called the McKenzie River National Recreation Trail that is 26 miles long. It is one of the most famous mountain bike trails. Mom’s goal while we are here is to hike each part of the trail. Dad and I drop her off at a trail head and she hikes about 5 miles at at time on the trail. Dad and go take shorter walks and play in the water and then pick her up at her ending point.

One morning early, Dad headed off and went to Proxy Falls. Mom and I slept in. He got to see some pretty great waterfalls. Says he will go back and take me.

This week on the Cape

Been a good week on Cape Meares with Dad.

Each day we have walked a long way on the beach. I sure like to run in the water and stiff along the driftwood.

Nothing like a good back scratch.

Love walking on the beach.

Alderbrook Golf Course

On Friday Dad left me at home and played golf at Alderbrook Golf Course in Tillamook.

He told me it was a lot of fun a a pretty golf course.
Mostly I just napped in the sun!

Lola is back!

Lola came back on Friday and brought Dustin and Jenni with her.

When they arrived Dad grilled Halibut for dinner and then went to the beach.

I don’t understand why they keep making us sit for pictures when there is an ocean and beach to play in. The good news is we always get a treat when they are done.

I also don’t understand why humans just stand and look at the Sunsets. Jenni seems to like it.
Me, I would rather run into the sunset.

Saturday

On Saturday we spent a lot of the day on the beach.

I would swim and then lay in the warm sun to dry.

I feel bad for Lola sometimes, she has to stay on a leash. She hasn’t learned yet to not bother other dogs when they run by.

It was fun watching Dustin and Dad fly a kite. It was a windy day.

When we got home from the beach I offered to help Dustin with his work.

They would not let Lola and I have any but from the look on Jenni’s face they were good!

It was kind of cold out and Jenni put on Dad’s gloves.

It was another fun night. I sure like it when Lola comes and brings Dustin and Jenni

Sunday Morning

Sunday morning after breakfast, Jenni went running and Lola and I for a walk with Dad and Dustin. It was so foggy you could hardly see.

But it did not stop me from sniffing

Some kids went by, you could hardly see them but they were laughing and playing like Lola and I were.

Lola had to go back home. I sure hope I get to play with her again before Dad and I go home!

Munson Creek Falls

Dad and I took a short drive just south of Tillamook today and hiked to Munson Creek Falls.

The hike to the falls is an easy one but really pretty.

The best part might be Munson Creek. I got to play in the water.

The trail was built by the Boy Scouts in the early 1960’s and is maintained very well by the Oregon State Parks.

Lots of new smells.

Munson Creek and its falls were named for Goran Munson, a settler who moved to Oregon from Michigan and homesteaded along the banks of Munson Creek in 1889.

Munson Creek drops down one of the most impressive waterfalls in Oregon’s Coast Range. The falls were for the longest time cited as dropping 266 feet in three tiers. Oregon State Parks however has cited the falls as standing 319 feet tall and the topographic maps support this figure.

Munson Creek Falls is a rather scenic, and rather impressive waterfall indeed. The small size of Munson Creek only becomes a detriment during the dry periods of the year (July to October generally), and when the canyon has leafed out during the late spring, the whole area glows green. Unfortunately logging has recently taken place right up to the lip of the amphitheater above the falls, which has seemingly resulted in several slides and trees falling into the canyon (including two new ones wedged in the falls itself).

The trail is closed near the base of the falls because of fallen logs. Dad and I went anyway and I walked around on the logs.

I got stuck and Dad had to lift me down. Easier to get up than down!

On the way back we hiked a up Cape Trail and took pictures of the beautiful views.

On the way home I got to sit in the front seat. I really wanted to drive but Dad would not let me.

When we got home I got a well deserved nap.

Lola is here!

Lola is here for the long weekend. The beach is so much more fun with a good friend.

Running together is the best.

Lola brought here Mom and Dad (Dustin and Jenni)

Jenni always gives me lots of hugs and kisses.

Lola and I laid out on the porch with them.

We celebrated the 4th of July with a bar-b-que.

The noise of the fireworks scared Lola. I felt bad for her.

We all visited the Cape Meares Lighthouse

It is very pretty there.

The lighthouse is not active anymore. There was a really nice lady in the gift shop and she had treats!

Dustin and Jenni really love each other.

They love Lola too!

Dustin had to do some work while he was here. Pretty nice place to work.

On Saturday Lola and I stayed home while the humans went Antiquing.

They had to leave on Sunday. I am really sad.

Playing alone on the beach is not as fun.

Cape Meares

Mom and Dad rented a place to spend July in the Community of Cape Meares. Cape Meares is 7 miles west of Tillamook, Oregon. It is a small beach grouping of homes on or very near the beach. Dad and I drove over with all of our stuff and plan on staying until late July. Mom is still in Tucson with Grandma Gwen. I sure miss Mom!! She would really like it here.
